How long are the classes?
Classes typically meet twice a week for an hour and a half. Some classes may meet three times a week for 1 hour. Science labs usually meet for longer, about 3-4 hours once a week. In general, you are in class for much less time in college than you are in high school. -Jules
How long do you need to stay in college?
It depends on what type of degree you are pursuing. To get an Associate's degree, which you can get at most community colleges and technical schools, it only takes 2 years. If you want to get a Bachelor's degree in some subject, like math or English or history, it will probably take you 4 years. Some careers, like teaching and law, require additional schooling after getting your Bachelor's, so you may choose to go to graduate school, which usually takes an additional 1-2 years. And if you want to be a doctor, you will have to go to medical school, which takes an additional 4 years. If you want to be a college professor, you would have to get your Ph.D, which can take up to 8 years! This all sounds like a lot of school, but if you are doing the kind of work you enjoy, it won't feel hard. You can spread out your schooling and work a job in-between so that it feels more manageable. Or you may find a job after college that you love and choose not to pursue more schooling, which is totally fine, too! -Jules
Do you need to go to college right out of high school?
You do not! Although it is common to go to college right out of high school, a lot of students wait. You may not feel ready to go to college right away, and that is ok. Some students do what is called a "gap year" when they take a year after high school to themselves before going to college. You might spend your gap year traveling, participating in a cool athletic or academic program, or working. Even if you don't take a gap year, you may just choose to stay home with your family a little longer before applying to college. You could get some job experience and earn some money before getting your degree. No matter what you choose to do after high school, know that it is never too late to go to college! -Jules
What if you want more than three or four majors?
Usually, people only have one or two majors. You could also have one or two minors (like mini-majors). Having more than that would take a lot of class time and studying! But, you could go to college for a long time and get different degrees over time! -Anna
