What are the steps to get to college?
Most colleges require some sort of application. The application can usually be filled out online, and it will probably ask you some questions about your high school, your family, your favorite activities to do, and more. The application may ask you to write one or a few essays that explain more about yourself. For example, I wrote a college essay about my favorite place in the world. Depending on the college, you may have a specific essay prompt to respond to, or you may be able to write whatever you want. Some colleges ask that someone submits a letter of recommendation on your behalf. You may ask a teacher or a coach who knows you well to write a letter describing your most positive attributes in order to convince the college to accept you. After you submit the application, you may be asked to interview. This just means that you will have a conversation with someone who works at the college. The interviewer may ask you questions about yourself, like “What was your favorite subject in high school?” or they may ask you questions, like “Why do you want to go to this college?” You may also get a chance to ask the interviewer questions about the school. The application process varies from college to college. If you check out a college’s website, under the “Admissions” tab, you will be able to find more information about that school’s application policy. Once you have applied, you have done all you can do and now you just have to wait to hear back from the college! -Julianna What do you do at college? You can go to class, play sports, join clubs, hang out with friends, volunteer in the community, study, go to lectures and concerts and parties, and more! -Anna Do you get to see your family? You do get to see your family! Your family can come to visit you on campus, or you can go home for a weekend, depending on what is best for your schedule. Some schools have a “Family Weekend” when there are a lot of fun events planned for students and their families to do. There are also a lot of breaks throughout the school year, so you will have a chance to go home and see your family for holidays. -Julianna How much does college cost? A lot. But it depends on the school you go to, and depends if you get scholarships. It can cost anywhere from $0-$70,000 a year. -Anna Can you take time off whenever you want? No, you should always go to class unless you are sick. There are breaks during the fall, winter, and spring when you can take time off. And every day or weekend, you can have some time to relax. -Anna Do you live there? Why? If your college has student dorms, then you can choose to live on campus. Some colleges are commuter colleges and they do not have housing options, so all students commute into school from their homes. Some schools do have dorms, where all the students live. And some schools have a mix of students who live on campus and students who live at home. It is your choice to decide where to live, based on what is best for you and your family. -Julianna Do you go to college every day? Usually you live at the college. If you don’t, you come every day you have class! So most days. -Anna Does it matter what age you are? Most college students are somewhere between the ages 17 and 24. Usually, students go to college after graduating from high school, and graduate within 4 or 5 years. But everyone has different life paths, and that is ok! Some students take a few years off of school before going to college, so they may start school when they are a bit older. Some students take more time to graduate college, so they may finish college at an older age. Lots of colleges accept adult students, and sometimes that is a better option for students because it gives them time to work a job before getting a degree. You should feel free to make college work for you, no matter what age you are. It is never too late to pursue your education! -Julianna After college do you sometimes need extra training? You may need or want extra training after college depending on what you want to do. If you want to be a lawyer, you may go to law school. If you want to be a doctor, you may go to medical school. You may choose to go to graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in some specialized area. For example, if you want to be a math teacher, you may go to graduate school to study education and/or math. You may want to get more vocational training if you want to be a specialized engineer. Some jobs don’t require that you get more training after college, but you may just want to because there is always more to learn! -Julianna Does your age affect how much college costs? Nope. Even if you go to college when you are older, the cost of tuition will be the same as it is for any student. You might get a different financial aid package if you are older and have your own job, but the total cost of college will be the same. -Julianna Are there any rooms where you can do homework at college? There are lots of rooms where you can do homework! Almost all schools have libraries with desks, books, computers, and other resources to help you study. Most schools also have a student center with more spaces where you can sit and do your work. If you’re living in a dorm room, then you can do your homework in there, too. Sometimes empty classrooms are available for students to use. Colleges want to help make it easy for you to get your homework done, so there will definitely be a room where you can work! -Julianna
